Here is a quick note about the State Fair:
Transition plan for the Michigan State
Fair Homebrew Competition
As many of you know the state of Michigan has decided to close the doors of the State Fair,
which has left the Michigan State Fair Homebrew Competition (MSFHC) without a home. Although the
state fair will not be held, the spirit of the MSFHC will continue to live on. Currently there is a
movement to transition the MSFHC into a new competition. This competition will be designed to
capture the best of our past and to enhance the future of the Michigan homebrew community.
Although the transition away from the State Fair is unfortunate, it has provided us with a significant
financial benefit which can be used to dramatically improve the prizes and awards which are given out
to the entrants. In addition to these prizes, the additional funds can be used to help create new events
and enhance existing competitions for the homebrew community. But before we can move ahead we
will need to see who is interested in participating.
In the upcoming months it is my intention to form a group of people who wish to help establish
a transition plan for the state fair competition. This committee will have open seats available to any of
the AHA sanctioned clubs in Michigan, and will also include a number of seats for individuals who are
not part of a club but actively participate in home brew competitions and community. The primary
purpose of this committee will be to establish the competition’s frame work, and aid in the facilitation of
the competition and awards ceremony. Currently we are looking for individuals who wish to actively
participate in this process or act as their club representative.
As a representative, you will act as the single voice for your club. All representatives will be
given the opportunity to influence the competition by participating in feedback, providing suggestions
and voting on key elements. Each representative will be given equal voting shares, and decision will be
made by the consensus. To facilitate this collaboration the majority of the work will be done using web
bases tools such as forums and survey sites, representatives will be encouraged to participate weekly in
order to vote and keep up on the current events.
In order to simplify the creation of this competition and reduce the work load, we will begin by
using the current MSFHC as a template. Although many issues will be addressed, our initial focus will be
to determine a name for the competition and establish the dates for judging and the awards ceremony.
Once these dates have been established it will allow us time to work out and schedule for any issue
which arises.
If you wish to take part in this process as a Non‐Club Representative or act as your club
Representative, please feel free send me an email at brewfestorg@gmail.com.
